How To Empty Your T-Shirt Closet

Spread the love

Uh-oh. You keep saying that you are in the process of downsizing, but when you get around to the t-shirts filling your closet, you just call it a day.

We know, it isn’t easy to make decisions on what t-shirts to keep and what ones to get rid of – hopefully by donating them to a local thrift shop or charity that can use them.

That’s why we have come up with this handy guide to assist you with the tough choices. If you follow these steps, you’ll be downsized in no time.

1 – When Did You Wear It Last?

There is a general rule of thumb that suggests if there is a clothing item that you have not worn for six months, then you should get rid of it. As we are talking about t-shirts, we have a couple of exceptions to that rule. If the t-shirt is from an event that brings back great memories, then you have to keep it. Also, if that t-shirt happens to be a valuable collectable, it has to stay.

2 – Duplicates

This should be a no-brainer. If your closet has three identical t-shirts, all in the same color, you can probably safely eliminate two of them from your closet and home. To make sure you kept the right one, lay all three out on a surface where you can see them all side by side. Look for any imperfections and this includes stitching, fading, cracking of any lettering or decals heat pressed into the shirt. The one that is in the best condition is the one that goes back into the closet.

3 – Size Matters

So you have a couple of t-shirts you bought that no longer fit you. We’re talking really, really small, tight fits. Even if you intend to lose enough weight to get back into those t-shirts, chances are that it going to take some time. Unless the t-shirts happen to be valuable collectables, it is time to send them off to somewhere else where someone who can wear them gets them.

4 – Poor Condition

We understand how comforting it is to have that trusty old t-shirt you can just toss on and lay around the apartment in. However, stretched out collars are one thing but rips and tears are quite another. Even if no one else sees you wearing this ratty old, torn t-shirt, maybe it needs to be recycled into something more useful – like rags or something other than a t-shirt.

5 – Storage Space

Sometimes hanging t-shirts is not really the best for them. If you need to make room in your closet, a quick remedy is to take out all the t-shirts. Fold them neatly and store them stacked on each other in piles inside dressers and on shelving. This extends their life and keeps many t-shirts from stretching out of shape. It also gets them out of your closet making room for other stuff.
